The hydraulic system is the network that turns engine power into motion. A small issue in a pump, valve, cylinder or hose line directly affects boom speed, digging force and operator comfort. Symptoms caught early often prevent a major overhaul.
1. Slowing movements or power loss
Clear slowing of the boom, bucket or travel can point to internal leakage, pump inefficiency or valve problems. “The machine feels a bit slow” is rarely enough — trends should be tracked against operating hours and load.
2. Excessive heat
Hydraulic oil running continuously at high temperature hardens seals, damages viscosity and shortens pump life. Dirty cooler surfaces, low oil level or the wrong oil grade can all trigger overheating.
3. Leaks and rising oil consumption
Hose fittings, cylinder seals and the tank area need regular inspection. Falling oil level without a visible leak is also a warning. Mismatched seals or hoses quickly recreate the fault.
4. Noise, vibration and foamy oil
Air ingress, cavitation or a dirty filter can create metallic noise and vibration on the pump side. Heavy foam in the oil means air entry or oil-quality issues should be investigated.
When should you call technical service?
- Power loss has continued for several shifts
- Temperature moves outside the normal operating range
- Leakage is more than a wipe-away smear
- Metal particles or a burnt smell appear in the oil
